Environmental Responsibility

BCE is committed to reducing negative environmental impacts and following the guidance of Bertelsmann, BCE commits to become carbon neutral by 2030.

In and beyond compliance with existing environmental laws and in recognition of the importance of environmental issues, BCE aims at continually reviewing and improving its environmental impact.

Since 2008, BCE has measured its carbon footprint every two years, and annually since 2015. We use these measures as a key indicator for continuously improving our environmental performance.

Responsibility for the environment

BCE strives to use natural resources responsibly in the production, processing and distribution of our content and services and ensure environmentally responsible procurement insofar as this is economical.

This applies in particular to materials and processes in procurement, production, digital content, storage media.

In line with our activities, BCE particularly focuses on electricity consumption which is responsible for most of BCE’s carbon emissions. In this respect, BCE’s headquarters are supplied since 2020 by a 100% renewable energy based on hydroelectric production.

Power the world with nature

BCE, in partnership with the Luxembourgish energy provider Enovos, has built two large photovoltaic power parks on its transmission sites in Beidweiler and Junglinster completed in 2020.

These are the first ground-mounted solar park of this size in Luxembourg with a total capacity of 7GWh. BCE and Enovos are already planning to build an extension in Beidweiler which will bring this capacity to 10GWh.

To ensure the environmental compatibility of our activities, we strive to use energy, water, materials and space responsibly.

Involvement of employees

The active involvement of BCE’s employees is an important precondition for an effective environmental performance.

As BCE’s employees are the company’s best ambassadors for environmentally sound behavior, BCE regularly raise their awareness on environmental issues, organize environment days and actions and expect them to behave responsibly towards the community and the environment.

BCE encourages as well working from home, making our employees part of the solution, reducing massively the amount of C02 produced while commuting.

At BCE, the waste sorting is organized, and its enforcement and respect is certified by the SDK label issued by the environmental administration (SuperDrecksKëscht fir Betriber).

Environmental organization

At BCE all operational processes are the responsibility of the departments. All BCE’s business units are requested to constantly reduce the negative environmental impact of our activities and have taken initiatives.

In that respect, the post-production department was the pioneer in providing freely their client with an in-house developed technology (called M2M) in order to exchange the content on a file-based scale instead of shipping physical tapes.

For projects located in faraway locations, the technical department gathers all the equipment in a dedicated place where BCE’s colleagues can preinstall and preconfigure all the equipment for a bulk shipment to the client. By doing so, we significantly reduced the transportation of equipment and staff.

As a member of the LEA (Luxembourg Event Association), BCE commits to provide services to the event industry using a reduced amount of waste, limiting its carbon impact and providing sustainable catering.

On the IT side, BCE has invested in cold aisle technology for its datacenters, reducing the electricity requirement for the cooling systems.

The Transmitter department, for its most energy intensive transmitting site, is part of the voluntary agreement on energy efficiency enforced between the Luxembourg Government and FEDIL (Luxembourgish multisectoral business federation).

Transparency and stakeholder dialogue

BCE is a partner in civic society.

BCE therefore undertake to maintain an open and mutually constructive dialogue with customers, business partners and other interested parties.

BCE seeks to achieve environmentally responsible solutions that satisfy the requirements of our external stakeholders, while at the same time safeguarding the competitiveness of our operations.
